The Academy for Musical Theatre is very proud to announce our advanced musical theatre workshop for Summer 2018 – Jesus Christ Superstar!
This will be our 21st annual “teen” show, for students who wish to pursue their craft at a high level. Although all of our workshops at the Academy are run professionally, this particular workshop will be focussed on training students who may wish to pursue musical theatre as a career, or wish to take their skills to the next level. Alumni of our teen shows over the years have gone on to careers in professional theatre, including the Stratford Festival, Mirvish, and even Broadway.
We very carefully choose our show for this workshop each year to insure that there are meaty roles for all of our star performers, a powerful musical score, and excellent dance opportunities, so that all of our cast have the chance to perform as true “triple threats.” We also look for a show that weighs powerful, and often difficult, social issues, as an integral part of our two weeks together is to provide a safe space in circle discussions to air different ideas and opinions about the themes and issues of the show. In this way, we can learn more about each other as fellow humans, and truly know what it’s like to “walk in someone else’s shoes.”
Jesus Christ Superstar is an epic show that gives us the perfect opportunity to do all of the above. The Andrew Lloyd Webber score is a powerful rock opera, and Tim Rice’s lyrics pack a punch. There are tons of spectacular roles that provide excellent vehicles for each of our performers to be challenged in their craft, and the show’s themes provide excellent, and topical, discussion material for our students.
What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire. The iconic rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.” A true global phenomenon.
If you are not familiar with the production, we realize that this title can seem misleading in terms of it being a “religious show” when this is, in fact, far from the case. The show looks at the characters historically, rather than religiously, investigating possibilities of “what really happened” during this tumultuous period in history, and what might have happened had these characters lived today, as the show is set in modern times. It looks at the reign of the Roman Empire, and a handful of rebels who tried to defy the law – protesting authority with cries of peace and love – it is incredibly topical today, given the current political situation. The production does not espouse or project any given religious doctrine (in fact, historically, the members of the revolting movement were Jewish, while the Romans were pagan – though this is never even mentioned in the show) – Christianity was not even conceived until a century or two after the historical events of this show took place. However, again, religious doctrine is not the focus of the show – history and clashing political ideas are, which makes it such a powerful vehicle for discussion about our current political situation. This, coupled with the powerful music make it such an incredible choice for our teen show this summer.
We hope to have you join us for this epic adventure!
