“Two-week Workshop” July 27-31 & August 4-7, 2020
This will be our 23rd annual “teen” show, for students who wish to pursue their craft at a high level. Although all of our workshops at the Academy are run professionally, this particular workshop will be focussed on training students who may wish to pursue musical theatre as a career, or wish to take their skills to the next level. Alumni of our teen shows over the years have gone on to careers in professional theatre, including the Stratford Festival, Mirvish, and even Broadway.
We very carefully choose our show for this workshop each year to insure that there are meaty roles for all of our star performers, a powerful musical score, and excellent dance opportunities, so that all of our cast have the chance to perform as true “triple threats.”
“Feed Me, Seymour!”
Isn’t funny how love can grow?
Skid Row florist’s clerk Seymour Krelborn is too shy to declare his love for his co-worker Audrey – until a mysterious exotic plant brings him unexpected fame and fortune. There’s just one problem: the plant has ambitions of its own, and it thrives on only one food – human blood. Awesome special effects, a tender love story and a fabulous sixties-style score all combine to make this sci-fi spoof a “monster” hit.
The original production of Little Shop of Horrors first debuted Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 and then suddenly Seymour and company made their way to the Orpheum Theater for an Off-Broadway production that ran for five years. A hybrid of sci-fi and comedy, the musical about a carnivorous plant looking to take over the world became a cult classic spawning numerous productions and had a film adaptation starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene in 1986. After almost four decades, it has still retained its cult status with its R&B flair and irreverent, yet earnest lyric.
On the twenty-third day of the month of September
In an early year of a decade not too long before our own
The human race suddenly encountered a deadly
Threat to its very existence
And this terrifying enemy surfaced
As such enemies often do
In the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places
Little Shop of Horrors
